Bengaluru, 21 May 2017: Hockey Chandigarh beat Sports Authority of India to win the title of the Hockey India 7th Sub Junior National Hockey Championship 2017 (Men) today.

Putting in a sublime performance, Hockey Chandigarh entered the match high on form and confidence, and were the dominant team through the match. In the beginning stages though Sports Authority of India were brilliant, defending stoutly and playing on the counter, negating all of Hockey Chandigarh’s play with smart tactical application. In a goal less first half, chances fell both ways, but neither team were able to lock down and open the scoring. Hockey Chandigarh came into the second half energised and with five minutes of the restart Sanjay successfully converted a PC to give them the lead. Forced to now chase the goal, Sports Authority of India opened up their shape and thus put themselves into a position to concede more goals. Hockey Chandigarh did not disappoint, slotting the second via Amandeep in the 47th minute. Sanjay scored a second in the 65th minute before Harpreet Singh wrapped up the victory with a goal in the 69th minute to ensure Hockey Chandigarh would finish champions.

Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy took third place, beating Hockey Odisha 3-2 in the first game of the day. Haider Ali put them in the lead in the 8th minute, with a well taken goal. Sunit Lakra equalised for Hockey Odisha in the 25th minute, but it wasn’t to last long. Two minutes later, Shailendra Singh restored Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy’s lead and then three minutes before halftime added another to his team’s tally. They went into half time leading 3-1. Hockey Odisha pulled back a goal within two minutes of the restart, Sushant Toppo converting a PC, but Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy were resolute in the defence, patiently parrying their opponents away to win the 3/4th place game.
