Results from Finals of Hockey India 6th Sub-Junior Men (A Division) National Championship 2016

Imphal, 22 May 2016: The final day of the  6th Hockey India Sub-Junior Men  National Championship  (A Division) started off with the 3rd  and 4th position match.

Hockey Chandigarh faced Hockey Jharkhand for the 3rd place. Chandigarh started off very strongly and took a 2-0 lead into half time via a brace from Sanjay (20’, 29’). There was no let up in their attacking intent as they scored two more quickly after the break via Sahibjeet Singh (37’, 40’). Jharkhand hit back with a goal in the 45th minute via Birsa Oreya, but it wasn’t enough as Chandigarh ran out 6-2 winners.

Prior to the final match, Mohd. Mushtaque Ahmad, Secretary General, Hockey India presented a memento to the Honourable Chief Minister of Manipur, Shri Okram Ibobi Singh  for successful hosting of the 6th Hockey India Sub-Junior Men  National Championship by Manipur.

Hockey Gangpur Odisha took on the home team Hockey Manipur in the final. Gangpur opened the scoring in the 14th minute via an Amandeep Lakra PC conversion. Manipur got back on level terms within three minutes though, seizing the equaliser via Dipu Laishram, and then in the 21st minute Laishram gave them the lead to take them 2-1 up into the the break.

Ganpur though came back strongly in the second half, and equalised in the 47th minute via Sudeep Chirmako. With two minutes of the game left, and the imminent threat of a shootout, Gangpur were awarded a penalty stroke, which was converted by Manip Kerketta. They held on to the lead breaking the home team’s hearts and took the victory  by 3-2 and won  the title of 6th Hockey India Sub-Junior Men National Championship.
